The desktop client can even limit its CPU usage when the user is active to reduce impact on system performance. You can keep previous versions of files for years, if necessary. On top of no-limit file sizes, there's no fixed limit to its versioning support. Once up and running you can mostly just forget about it, and leave CrashPlan to handle securely continuous and scheduled backups with both online and local destinations. We found this to be a hugely customizable service for Windows, Mac, and Linux with a pain-free setup. ![]() That’s the eye-catching pitch from Crashplan. But if you like its ease of use, or need its features or business integrations, Dropbox could still be your best cloud backup choice.Ī comprehensive business backup service that’s simple to use with no file size limits. Its Plus plan, for example, gives home users 2TB for $10 a month compared to iDrive’s 5TB for $5 a month in year one ($6.63 on renewal). Perhaps the biggest issue is price - Dropbox can’t match the likes of iDrive for price. ![]() Paper also supports works as a brainstorming tool, a project manager, a calendar, a To Do list, a Wiki, and more. We're not just talking about the multi-user text editors you'll find elsewhere. Paper, for example, is a collaboration platform where multiple users can work on the same document. The business-focused tools are also an excellent addition. We found upload and download times almost twice the speed we've seen from some competition across both the apps and web interface. On-demand backups are as simple as dragging and dropping your target files into the Dropbox folder, for instance, while the Dropbox Backup tool runs automated backups of your chosen files and folders while you get on with other tasks. The interface feels clean and elegant, and we particularly liked the web app, which clearly presented our files and folders, allowed streaming media files directly from the web, and came bundled with a host of useful options and well thought-out usability touches. Minor quibbles, really, for a platform that delivers an impressively wide breadth of services across all platforms at a good price.ĭropbox Business upgrades the popular cloud storage service - but it’s otherwise familiar territory for those who use the feature-filled platform.įor all its power, Dropbox is exceptionally easy to operate. Nor did the interface wow us - it’s a bit basic, although in fairness, it gets the job done well. However, we were disappointed that you can't access these web features from the desktop client. When we reviewed the service, we were impressed with the sync speeds, with good file recovery and versioning tools. Personal plans can do this once a year for free, business plans get three tries. ![]() Your internet isn’t fast enough to back up or restore hundreds of gigabytes of data? The IDrive Express service allows you to send files to or from iDrive on a USB drive via the mail. ![]() A basic Personal plan starts at 5TB for just under $60 a year, with the Business plan starting at 250GB for $75 a year. But for all its power, we found iDrive's apps very easy to use, and our speed tests revealed backup performance was a good match for Google Drive and the top storage contenders.įor what you get, we were impressed with the subscription prices. You can protect as many devices as you like with a single account.Ī lengthy list of backup options starts with simple file and folder protection, but you can also protect your iPhone's photos, videos, contacts and calendar, maybe add SMS on an Android phone, even create a full disk image for disaster recovery purposes later. For more experienced users, there’s Linux via assorted scripts, and a range of network-attached storage devices like QNAP, Synology, Netgear, and Asustor. Wide platform support covers Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, and an intuitive browser portal. The statue is dedicated not only to the Ottawa dial-painters, but also to ‘dial-painters who suffered all over the United States … in recognition of the tremendous perseverance, dedication and sense of justice the Radium Girls exhibited in their fight’. At Christmas time, locals drape the statue with a red homemade knitted scarf, to keep her warm in winter. “This is the memorial statue to the Radium Girls, which stands in Ottawa, Illinois. When my husband and I had a glass of prosecco after I typed THE END on my first draft, before either of us drank a drop we first turned to the wall on which their pictures were pinned and raised our glasses to them.” Make it good, communicate their story, because they deserve this. Kate Moore said this: “Every time I talk about the women, I tell myself: do it for them. In an interview, the author stated she posted the girls’ photos around the room while writing this book. Members found themselves looking at the photos while reading and thinking of the girls. Many members made positive comments regarding the photos included in the book. Just be warned your nightmares might suddenly feature your teeth and jaws rotting out of your head for the next several months. The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women by Kate Moore So, if you have the stomach and emotional stability for it, I highly recommend this one. Moore takes sides, and she is firmly on the side of these women. This is not an objective journalistic take. A British narrator would have been better, to give us more a taste of the voice of the author, who is not entirely absent from these pages. Narrator Angela Brazil was a bit robotic. I did the audio, and while it wasn’t great, it wasn’t awful, either. Even as the stories of these girls were horrifyingly monotonous and grim, the same awful things playing out again and again, the book remains engaging. Moore, who is British, is a great writer, and she shepherds this story with apparent ease. The dial-painting factories started up in the early 1920s and continued, as a horrifying post-script informs us, through the 1970s, even after not one but two well-publicized trials resulted in the knowledge that radium was a gruesome, wrenching killer. It was known since 1901 that radium was harmful, if not exactly how. The beyond good wages these companies paid these women are nothing in comparison to what their careless capitalism, greed, and willful ignorance cost the women in return. This is some body horror shit, let’s be frank. ![]() The result is that you get a clear picture of just exactly how far these literal shining girls (they glowed from all the radium) fell as their health began to fail, and the radium that was slowly poisoning them wreaked its havoc on their bodies. Moore extensively researched the women this story is about, and she pulled not only from scholarly books and articles about them, but from their own personal correspondence, journals, and memories from friends and family. Anyone with an ounce of empathy will find this one a tough go. Jackson moment in cinema:Īnd I truly mean that. An absorption spectrum results when light from a continuous source passes through a cooler gas, consisting of a series of dark lines characteristic of the composition of the gas. The orbit with n = 1 is the lowest lying and most tightly bound. An emission spectrum can be produced by a gas at low pressure excited by heat or by collisions with electrons. This spectrum contains dark lines on bright. In his final years, he devoted himself to the peaceful application of atomic physics and to resolving political problems arising from the development of atomic weapons.Īs n decreases, the energy holding the electron and the nucleus together becomes increasingly negative, the radius of the orbit shrinks and more energy is needed to ionize the atom. Absorption spectrum : The spectrum produced by absorbed radiation is known as absorption spectrum. Stellar spectra are approximately a black body spectrum, but this mostly holds true for the most hot and luminous O and B type stars for cooler stars, the image already gets quite a bit more muddled, as they will show more and more absorption happening in the stellar photosphere, as well as other effects that ruin the nice, smooth black body sp. ![]() ![]() It is with the Renaissance, however, that the era of modern anatomical studies begins. While much of the western world lost touch with the classical past, Islamic scholars collected and translated the works of Hippocrates and Galen – among many others – and absorbed and synthesized the ancient theories with new discoveries of their own. Despite advances in medical scholarship, Quranic injunctions against human dissection and human representation in drawing placed severe limitations on the critical and accurate analysis of human anatomy. Later in the Medieval period, the resurgence of Europe led to the establishment of universities and the retranslation of classical works into Greek and Latin. In the fourteenth century, some rare human dissections were carried out at European medical schools, ordinarily with the anatomist seated on a dais at the head of a large room, reading from a manuscript of Galen, while a demonstrator opened the body, surrounded by students and other scholars. The West owes a great debt to the Arab civilization which conquered the Byzantine successors of Ancient Rome. This anatomical demonstration shows the professor in full robes overseeing a dissection and an assistant poised to make his incision. Although the great Roman physician Celsus, of the first century AD, and Galen, of the second, both refer to Alexandrian scholarship, the resurgent taboo on human dissection coupled with the loss of the text On Anatomy allowed descriptions of human anatomy presented as fact to slip back into the untested – and largely incorrect – domain of theory. With the conquest of Alexandria by Rome, a significant detriment to the advance of medicine occurred in the reversal of the cultural climate favorable to human dissections. It seems probable that such thorough examinations must have been accompanied by drawings, though none have survived, and none of the classical works existing in transcription mention Hellenistic anatomical drawings. One of these physician-scholars was Herophilus, who produced the treatise On Anatomy, synthesizing the results of many hundred human dissections. The availability of the Corpus in the stimulating intellectual environment of Hellenistic Alexandria likely inspired medical scholars finally to take up the knife and undertake systematic human anatomical studies for the first time in classical history. Shown here is the dissection of a swine with more animals being bundled in on the right. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries a revival of interest in Galen’s work resulted in Latin translations illustrated by imaginary scenes. The Hippocratic Corpus catalogued in Alexandria’s renowned library was a collection of works by Hippocrates himself and successor physicians practicing at his school on the eastern Aegean island of Kos. Scholars and students of many disciplines congregated there and examined both Aristotle’s comparative anatomical studies and the works of Hippocrates. The Greek project found perhaps its greatest expression in the Library of Alexandria, in the city Alexander established on the Nile delta. he made Greek intellectual achievements a dominant force in the civilized world. Among Aristotle’s many students was the young Alexander, son of Philip of Macedon, and when Alexander earned the epithet “the Great” by conquering a vast territory in the third century B.C. In this important work lay the foundations for comparative anatomy, still it proved inadequate to explain the particularities of the human body. Aristotle, the famous natural philosopher two generations younger than Hippocrates, also considered anatomical study critical to medical knowledge and practice, but he developed theories of human anatomy based only on exterior physical examination and the dissection of animals. 33) Certainly no faculty member of a modern medical school would contradict the ancient master on this point, yet for many centuries – indeed for millennia – anatomical study had a distinctly uneasy relationship with medical education and practice. ![]() “ Anatomy is the foundation of medicine,” the classical Greek physician Hippocrates declared, “and should be based on the form of the human body.”(Persaud, p.
